The Calligraphy Group meets at Marilyn Jones’s home every 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month from 1pm to 3pm.
Of course if anyone wishes to start another group then any information or advice that we have can be shared. When the group began eight years ago I knew nothing about Calligraphy and just wanted to learn The Art of Beautiful Writing.
Traditional Calligraphy

The Calligraphy Group will enable members to share knowledge and learn traditional Calligraphy styles beginning with Foundational, and Gothic Hands using a broad nib.
We can progress onto different hands when ready, including Uncial, Italics, Legende, and Roman
This is an example of Uncial Hand on a hand painted Christmas Card designed by one of our Calligraphy Group members.
Learn the Art of Beautiful Writing. Learn through practice, videos, and more practice.
To start with bring along an A4 ruled pad, or an A4 Layout pad.... either is fine.
Members can try out different pens, nibs, and inks initially that are in Marilyn’s stash, until they find what is suitable for them.
The group is always open to new suggestions according to members' interests and provides the opportunity to try out something new.
Beginners as well as experienced Calligraphers are welcome.
Illuminated Lettering
Recently we embarked on working with Illuminated Lettering. This art is useful to decorate greeting cards and posters etc, and compliments Calligraphy. This example was made by one of our Calligraphy Group members.
In early medieval times, monks were the sole makers of illuminated manuscripts. Before universities existed, monasteries were the central places for learning. Monks copied books mainly for use in worship.

About our Group
A new large conservatory was been built during lockdown and this will ensure that everyone has enough space and the best natural light possible.
A WhatsApp Group called Calligraphy Capers has been set up especially for the Calligraphy Group. This enables members to keep in touch, and get access to practice and tracing sheets, help and support whenever they need it between Group meetings.
Links to a OneDrive (Cloud Storage) folder is available where there is much more documentation and practice sheets that can be downloaded and printed out as and when required.
Members can source their own pens and other materials and a Treasurer has been appointed to keep track of any money when the members want to order materials collectively to share the costs (P&P and sometimes reductions when you buy more than one).
