Inside the Magistrates’ Court

Ever wondered how magistrates decide what sentence to give? Join us for a fascinating and interactive look behind the scenes of the magistracy with John Perry, recently retired Presiding Justice at Nottinghamshire Magistrates’ Court.

John will focus mainly on the work of the criminal court, drawing on his experience as a magistrate, including many occasions sitting at Mansfield. This won’t just be a talk, though. John has prepared three sentencing exercises where you’ll get the chance to consider the evidence, decide what sentence you would pass if you were a JP, and see how your decision compares.

He’ll also briefly explore the work of the Youth and Family Courts and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
