It was great to see the Science and Technology Group back up and running — thanks to David Drew for reigniting interest and enthusiasm among our members.
Today’s meeting, held at the Bowling Club in Mansfield, brought together ten members, including several from the original group who shared valuable knowledge and feedback.
After an introductory discussion on how the group will move forward, we paused for tea, coffee and biscuits kindly served by our top team, Sylvia Newlyn and Ian Lakin.
David then gave a fascinating PowerPoint presentation on the Spitfire and its designers.
A brief summary of the talk:
R.J. Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works, was responsible for the iconic design of the Spitfire. His innovative aerodynamic work drew on experience from the Schneider Trophy seaplanes. The aircraft’s success also owed much to its engine — the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin, developed from the PV-12. Mitchell collaborated closely with Rolls-Royce to ensure the engine and airframe complemented each other perfectly, producing one of the most successful fighter aircraft of all time.
The meeting was a lively and enjoyable session among a friendly group of like-minded enthusiasts.
