The History Group has a hard core of members - about 12 in number who regularly meet once a month and often another 3 or 4 in addition. Members prepare subjects which might be of interest to other members and read out what they have prepared giving the opportunity for questions about what has been heard.

There is no obligation to write something for the group but some members produce new topics during most monthly meetings. The Group does not define particular themes to be followed. Members choose for themselves what they want to cover in their presentations, producing an eclectic range of topics.

Recent topics covered include the Don Pacifico affair, the exercise of gunboat diplomacy by Lord Palmerston against Greece in 1850; the siege of Vienna by the Ottoman Turks in 1686; the siege of Malta by the Ottoman Turks in 1565. It is not just about wars and battles;

We get a wide variety of topics at our meetings New members are welcome whether or not they have a burning desire to present their work to the group We often have about 6 topics presented in any one session.

Members pay £2 for each session. This contributes to the payment of the hiring of the premises for 11 months of the year - we don't meet in August. Members pay £1 per session for tea and biscuits and sometimes home made cakes.

The Group meets at the Mansfield Bowls Club in Chesterfield Road South.

We look forward to hearing suggestions for interesting presentations coming through from Group members. Presentations which have some quirky appeal are especially welcome. If you have a particular passion for some historical event, by all means bring it forward.
